Exams, Illustrations, Teaching and Reading

My exams and my placement are almost finished. I’m definitely going to miss my students over the winter break. I’m trying to think of something nice I can do for them on Friday but because I’m still studying for my final exam I haven’t had much time to do that.

My students discovered that I draw, and so I’ve got a bunch of commissions to finish by Friday. Right now I’m drawing a cat. Maybe I’ll post it when I’m done.

My favourite thing about my placement is that the moment I arrive they’re all excited to see me. That honestly makes my day. I hope in the future when I’m teaching on my own I’ll get that same reaction from my students.

I’ve also been getting a lot of great advice from the teacher I’m working with. The age group I’m with is actually a little older than what I applied to teach but it’s great because I’m learning a lot about myself, and certain things that I need to work on.

As for my exams…well I’m still studying. I’ve gotten a bit of help on some of the stuff I don’t know. I’m not nervous or anything so that’s good. My plan is to just review as much as I can today and tomorrow morning, and just do the best that I can. As long as I do my best, then I have no reason to be nervous. I’ve studied the material, and I tried my best. That’s what matters.

Now, book updates: due to having also having exams, my illustrator for the children’s book is currently on break. We were hoping all the illustrations would be officially finished before December but then got swamped with assignments. So, as of the 18th of December we will get back to work on the illustrations. I’ll also have the rest of my beta readers go through my novel, since I’ll have more hard copies printed off by then. Some people don’t mind it when you send a PDF but eh…there are people like me who like to make notes on the page when reading over people’s work. I’m hoping for some really helpful feedback. I’m hoping to decide on what I’m doing with the cover this week…I think I found a designer who can do what I want. If all goes well the book will be released during the winter time, which would be awesome.

Anyway I’d better get back to reading my textbook here.

Stay golden,

NANOWRIMO: Children’s Book Update

The illustrations for the book are even better than I imagined. My story has completely come to life. I can’t wait to show them off. I’m very excited about finally adding the text to the images.

I hope Nanowrimo is going well for everyone. I’ve been extremely busy with school and…life in general so I haven’t had much time to post this month. Not as much as I’d have liked anyway.

I have a meeting today so I have to keep this short.

I hope you’ll check out the book when it’s published!

Book Update

The illustrations are coming along nicely. We’re aiming to have them all complete by the end of the month.

In the meantime we’re thinking about our marketing strategies. Creating a business plan can be a lot of work, but it’s definitely worth it. It’s better to know what you’re going to spend, and how much you plan on making on your return. Everything needs to be taken into consideration. I was lucky enough to come across someone who could provide me with a template to work off of. I’m also lucky as my Dad has a copy of the business plan he made up years ago. It made it a lot easier when trying to format everything and work out the numbers.

I know that it may seem like a pain in the butt to do, but it’s something that you should be doing. Writing is a business, where one can be their own boss. The reason why some people fail when they’re self-employed is because they skipped the planning process and decided to jump into something without calculating the risks.

Anyway, enough business talk. I’m going to try to prepare some breakfast…although I’m a little unsure as to what I want to eat today.

Till next time,

R.

Happy Birthday Gummy Bear!

So, today is my nieces 5th birthday!

Happy birthday little girl. Keep being you, cause you’re awesome as you are.

And just for you, I’m going to share the song we sing together.

Presenting, the Gummy Bear song, which my niece likes to sing while pretending she is a DJ.

Love you. Hope you like your present. 🙂

My mom nicknamed us all after candies, and so we call my niece Gummy Bear, and this is a song my little sister and I used to sing when we were little kids, so we brought it back…and boy does it annoy my folks when the three of us sing this over and over and over during car rides.

Hello Nanowrimo/Writing Updates

I will be posting a lot more writing updates this month as it is Nanowrimo (hooray!).

So, for my first update I recently did some character designs for a novel that I’m working on. I’d only attempted to draw these characters once before, which was months ago. I’m definitely satisfied with my current take on them. I actually put them in Halloween costumes since I drew the most recent one near the end of October.

As for my other projects I made the decision to redo the illustrations for my children’s book. This was kind of a last minute decision, but I want to be satisfied with my work and I wasn’t happy with how the other drawings turned out. They didn’t really come to life the way I’d wanted them too. I also am taking a children’s literature course right now, and after looking through a lot of the illustrations in these children’s books I just found that the first ones I did were…almost lazy, and in reality the images should draw more attention…they should be more animated. So, back to the rough sketches for round two. Hoping they’ll turn out the way I want them. Once the illustrations are to my liking, I’ll be publishing.

With the rate I’m going at with my novels, the children’s book will most likely come out first…which is completely opposite of what I thought. Originally the book I’d started like…three years ago, I thought I’d be publishing first. As for the one I did character designs for, I hadn’t even planned on extending it into a novel. It began as a short story. So…sometimes things don’t always go according to plan, but I feel like everything has lined up nicely.

Well, those are my updates for now. More are to come. I don’t know if I’ll post them daily or weekly, but whenever I update I will do my best to inform you all.

It’s midnight, so I’d better go to sleep. I’ve dedicated tomorrow to doing chores and homework before my class…so…yah. Hopefully I can squeeze in some writing while I’m waiting for my laundry but you know…homework is a thing. I have to get it done eventually.

Keep writing!

“I don’t want to sleep on my own anymore.”

She woke up and found that she was alone. With sleep in her eyes she crawled out of bed, and made her way towards the dark hallway. Her heart was already racing from that dream, now the hallway was so dark that she could barely see a thing.

Her lips quivered, but she stepped out into the hall. She knew where to go. She twisted the knob and whipped open the door–as she would if it were morning–then made her way towards the bed.

“Ryder, I don’t want to sleep by myself anymore,” she whimpered.

Ryder’s eyes shot open. “Wha?”

The little curly-haired girl pouted.

“Want me to come stay with you?” Ryder asked hoarsely, sitting up.

“Yah….”

So, Ryder got up out of bed and followed her through the dark hallway, and into the room with lots of night lights. Ryder gave the little girl a sleepy grin as she sprawled across the bed, not thinking to leave room for anyone else.

“Well, this is the same little girl who kicked me in the head while she was asleep,” Ryder laughed.

The little girl rolled over, closing her eyes, lettings Ryder lay down.

Ryder tucked the two of them in and the little girl latched onto the blanket, curling into a ball. Ryder looked at the time and sighed. At least work wasn’t until the following evening.

“Ooph!”

Ryder glanced at the little girl and frowned as she threw her legs up, and twisted her body around like a wiggling worm.

“Oh, whatever.”

The little girl’s legs flew up into the air as she tossed and slammed into Ryder’s back. There they stayed as she slept peacefully, her knee in Ryder’s side.

With a gentle sigh Ryder took the giant, fluffy giraffe and used it as a pillow.

“Oh look…aw…hmm…sunlight.”

Goodnight/morning.

Don’t worry, my back should be fine in time for any potential piggy-back rides.

AHH! Lot of Homework

Well I’ve got a lot of homework to do this month. Busy, busy.

I am working on a fun little project. Well two actually. If the one project isn’t finished by the time its due I’ll post it online. Its just something extra that I wanted to do for bonus marks but with all the essays, books and assignments I have I’m not sure if I’ll get it finished in time. I’d love to though. I rarely get to hand in my drawings for a project.

I may or may not have my children’s book reviewed along with the rest of my creative writing portfolio. I’ve got a lot of material but its hard putting together eight pieces to showcase. I haven’t done the illustrations for the children’s book yet so that means I may or may not be staying up till odd hours drawing tonight and tomorrow. We’ll see.

Hope you all have a great rest of your week and for anyone else inching towards exams or with a ton of assignments…or just with a lot on their plate right now, we’ll get through this. One step at a time.

Stay golden,

R.

Book 12 is Mine!

Yesterday I finally got book 12! After a two year wait…the book is mine.

I also bought my nieces birthday presents. I got her a bunch of books, since she’s in kindergarten and she’s learning to read.

My sister-in-law asked me to do so last time I saw her, since my niece has many, many, many toys.

I’m actually very excited about reading some of the books with her, because I got books that I used to adore as a kid. They made me laugh and the illustrations were fantastic.

I even reread all of them before buying them, just to make sure they were still funny. They were.

I’m so happy I spent the day at Chapters. I mean…now I’m a little behind on my reading for class tomorrow but I was really stressed out with my assignments and needed a break.

Actually I took a break from Saturday to Monday. However it was worth it, I did a lot of new things. Got to know the city better and I met some cool people.

However, I really need to earn some money. Maybe I’ll have a book sale? Sell some books so I can buy some books. I really like books.

I also bought myself a journal because I’d like to get back into telling my own personal story. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll open up one of my old journals from when I was twelve and use it to help my kids, or even the kids I’m going to be teaching through what they’re experiencing. Journaling and blogging are seriously great therapy for me. So is song writing…but yah. It really helps me clear my head.

I’m so glad I have this book now.

Thanks for ordering it for me dad.

Once Upon A Time…

Once Upon A Time…

By Orion Ryder

Once upon a time, there was a man who began pondering the meaning of life.

He asked his mother. He asked his brother. He asked the gold-fish in his pond; however he forgot to ask his father.

The man had no sister. No wife. No Saturday Night Live or Jimmy Kimmel.

He felt as though he lived each day in a boring shell. Those around him called the shells, “Bodies.”

Some bodies were small. Some large. Some very large. Some very, very small. Some tall. Some short. Some dead.

The man never learned the meaning of life.

Little Donnie and the Big Black Clouds

rain-cloud-15642888

It was a gloomy day on Rosemary Avenue.

Little Donnie sat near the window with a scowl on his face, watching the big black clouds loom over his house. Donnie would have preferred to have been playing outside with his friends but Mother had said, “A storms comin’. You don’t wanna be caught in a storm, do you?”

To which Donnie replied with a, “No Mum.”

And so he sat and he scowled.

Moments passed and no rain came.

Donnie grew frustrated.

“The clouds just don’t want me outside!” He thought. “They’re making fun of me! It’s never going to rain!”

Well that was it for him. Donnie hopped up off the floor and stomped over to the shoe rack. He slid on his rain boots, slipped on his jacket and marched out the front door.

Donnie looked up at the sky and stuck out his tongue. “No clouds ever scared me!” he shouted. Suddenly he heard a loud roar. It sounded as if someone…or something were very, very upset with him.

Crack! Went the lightning.

Boom! Followed the thunder.

Donnie’s eyes lit up as the flashes of light zipped across the sky. He hurried to the door, stumbling in his boots. He nearly lost balance when he heard the next Crack! He twisted the knob and flung open the door.

Mother tilted her head and gave him a half-grin.

Donnie ran to her and gave her a hug. “Oh Mum, I think the storm is angry with me!” the little boy sobbed.

“Actually, I think it’s saying, ‘Listen to your Mother and stay indoors’.” she chuckled, kissing the crown of his head.

Author’s Note:

Thanks for reading my short story. I was inspired to write this because I came across an old children’s book of my fathers, and started reading from it. The book was a collection of short stories about children. I found it to be a really nice book, something that the whole family could enjoy (if you have small children). The pictures are very nicely illustrated and the stories are only about a page long. There are poems, and songs created by the children in the tales as well…I hope that I can get (or write) a book that fun and engaging for my own children (and for other children as well).

Hoping that you’re all having much better weather than I am,

Orion.
